To Compare Yourself with bad does not mean you are good…

To Compare Yourself with bad does not mean you are good…

Turning in for the night and this phrase kept ringing in my head

I was reading an article the other day that listed out possible reasons why someone who has been passed up for a promotion multiple times might continue to stay in an organization

The only reason I remember from the article was that “the person has realized that they are not as good as they have thought themselves to be”

That struck me

I am a big believer of self awareness

I also like to think I am very self-aware but then I wonder: do people who are “not self-aware” know that they aren’t?

Mustn’t they also think that they are in fact self-aware?

I started to spiral as usual – am I actually self-aware?

Have I been jaded this whole time?

Thinking I know things about myself that I actually don’t?

I spiraled some more.

Back to the phrase – “To compare yourself with bad does not mean you are good”

What does this mean ?

This idiom comes to mind: “In the village of the blind, the one-eyed man is king”

I mean, to be fair that idiom is fair enough

It could tie in with my phrase but it could also not

“To compare yourself with bad does not mean you are good”

Let’s consider situations where one might be comparing themselves with bad

All bad can’t be the same bad

So just because someone’s bad is not your bad does not mean you are good

Does that make sense?

Think about a paint and sip exercise where everyone is painting for the first time – you tend to see so many variations of a bad paintings; some worse than others.

Just because someone’s paint job came out worse than yours does not necessarily make your painting good

Get it ?

Can you think of situations in life where you have erroneously tagged yourself as good simply because you saw how bad others were in that same situation?

Should we even think this way?

It’s a tad depressing

Some of us have given ourselves a brighter day by these simple words: “I guess it could have been worse

Is this write up making you question your use of those words?

That was not my plan

The phrase just wouldn’t leave my head, I had to do something with it.

“To compare yourself with bad does not mean you are good”

It has been almost a year since I was last here and this is what I could come up with?

Well, I guess it could have been worse 🙂
